Training in Ericksonian Approaches
to Hypnosis and Psychotherapy
Level 1: Introduction
September 28th and 29th, 2007
The introductory program is designed to present a thorough overview to
Milton Erickson’s approaches in hypnosis and psychotherapy. The program will cover the basic principles of an Ericksonian approach and includes:
• How to utilize an individual’s behavior and symptoms to induce trance
• How to recognize and use trance phenomena in therapy
• How to use indirection and implication
• How to bypass conscious resistance by embedding suggestions
• How and when to use trance for pain and habit control
• Ego strengthening and self-image building
• How to use trance with couples and families
• How to use and construct metaphors targeting specific therapeutic goals
• How to use metaphors with trance work
• How to construct multiple embedded metaphors
The course will also explore the links between strategic and hypnotic therapies and how paradoxical, strategic, and ambiguous function assignment can be combined with trance work to bring about therapeutic change.
The training program will combine lecture, demonstration, discussion, and experiential exercises and practice.

Advanced Techniques in Ericksonian Hypnosis and Psychotherapy
Level 2: Advanced
October 27th and 28th, 2007
This course is designed for practitioners who have completed the Introduction Course or its equivalent, and who have a basic knowledge and understanding of Dr. Erickson’s approaches and techniques. The primary emphasis will on mastering the information and skills acquired in the Introductory course through intense and focused practice and review. In addition the following topics will be covered:
• How to use pseudo-orientation in time in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder
• How to use trance in the treatment of chronic illness such as asthma, high blood pressure, heart disorders, and skin disorders
• How to use trance in the treatment of pain and habit control
• How to use hypnosis in the treatment of panic disorders
Lecture, demonstration, discussion and supervised practice will be used in the Advanced class.
